Laser Against Hair

In order to individually select the intensity of exposure and prevent a serious burn, modern devices are equipped with adjustable flash power. Also, the effectiveness of the procedure is associated with the individual concentration of melanin in the hair – it is believed that laser hair removal is less effective for less pigmented and thin hairs and more visits will be required for such clients. However, in practice, doctors note the need for fewer sessions for patients with less lush vegetation: often the density and thickness of the hair are interrelated things. This is probably due to the hormonal background programmed by hereditary factors – just these people have hair growth less pronounced in principle. Since there is also melanin in the skin, and more of it in the skin is dark and tanned, it is not recommended to sunbathe before the procedure for at least 4 weeks, so as not to get a burn. Dark hair on fair skin is best exposed. White, gray, fluffy hair is not removed. Red hair is very poorly removed.

On average, it takes about 4-6 visits with an interval of a couple of months to get rid of almost all hair in this area. Both men and women turn to specialists to remove unwanted hair. The procedure is carried out in a wide variety of areas: armpits, bikini area, legs, arms, back, chin, upper lip and others.

What is the procedure for photothermolysis?

Before the first procedure, the doctor makes sure that the patient has no contraindications. Contraindications are:

– tanned skin in the area of the procedure,

– the use of any method of hair removal, except shaving, 1 – 1.5 months before the procedure (effectiveness decreases),

– individual intolerance to the procedure (increased skin sensitivity to light),

– taking certain medications: Isotretinoin (Roaccutane), steroid hormones, some antibiotics (especially the tetracycline series), anti-inflammatory drugs (Naproxen, Ibuprofen), antidepressants (Prozac),

– acute or chronic recurrent herpetic infection,

– diabetes mellitus in the stage of decompensation,

– various acute and chronic skin diseases,

– the presence on the body of burns, abrasions, scratches, other violation of the integrity of the skin,

– pregnancy or breastfeeding,

– a tendency to form hypertrophic or keloid scars,

– oncological diseases,

– some diseases, in the pathogenesis of which the reaction of the skin to light plays an important role: pellagra, systemic lupus erythematosus, porphyria. Patients with psoriasis, blood coagulation disorders, vitiligo and strong histamine reactions (urticaria) should be treated very carefully.

Only after making sure that there are no contraindications, the doctor can begin the procedure. He evaluates the patient’s skin type, hair color, pain sensitivity and, on the basis of this information, sets up the device – individually for each patient. Often, an anesthetic cream, such as Emla, is applied before photothermolysis in order to minimize discomfort. Then the beautician takes the manipulator of the device and moves it over the skin. The device delivers short laser pulses, before which a cryogen is sprayed on the treated area (not all devices have this option), which prevents the skin from overheating. The cryogen itself is environmentally friendly and completely safe, it instantly cools the skin, and the laser flash passes much less painfully. The duration of the procedure depends on the area of the treated area. The actual laser hair removal procedure above the upper lip, for example, takes only a couple of minutes.
